The focus of the studio was to explore the possibilities of steel construction in the face of complex site conditions through the design of a single-family residence on a narrow lot in the coastal neighborhood of Venice, California.  Situated along one of the last remaining man-made canals in a designated historic district, the site offered unique opportunities to negotiate between waterfront views, strict zoning codes, and other environmental factors.

The clients are a young couple with a growing brood and tight budget.  As creative professionals, they are often working from home and need to accommodate the occasional renter to offset their fluctuating income.  Their active lifestyle requires a flexible home that can grow with them.

The steel structure of four bays is standardized for ease of building and to maximize occupiable space while allowing sufficient customization to support a range of public and private activities.  A lush “green wall” on the south face creates a two-story breezeway that frames a spectacular canal view and enhances the natural ventilation of the home.  Because the structural design allows the top floor to be hung, the living spaces on the lower level are lined with glass doors that can be opened up to bring the outdoors in.
