Champ Libre

Once a wasteland, the site of the "champ libre” is now meant to host a mixed program having as main elements the offices of the European Medicines Agency, a hotel, a business center and commercial spaces. This ambitious 40,000 sqm program allows a coherent reflection at the urbanization of the last remaining plots of the Euralille 2 project. Our project aims to continue the optimistic and foundational vision that emerged from the original OMA project plans. Even though abstract, the initial sketch of Euralille manifests a desire for the richness and diversity of the "grids" of development. Thirty years later, it still boasts of the modernity of a thought that had already proclaimed a flexible and renewable city. In the spirit of the initial plan, our project introduces the unexpected. The architectural project is part of a new framework that highlights strategic axes in two directions, north-south orientation for the main buildings, east-west orientation for supporting office services. The link with Lille’s city center is ensured by the east-west transversal axis which opens a visual connection from the crossroad to the “champ libre”. The Boulevard des Cités Unies, which is today perceived as an exit of the city, will be enriched by a pedestrian pathway to the “petit bois” landscaped part of our project. These new axes of the project give new directions of orientation as regular strips that are reminiscent of cultivated fields. The landscape design is inserted between the main office buildings.
