San Diego—April 29, 2013—The Construction Management Association of America’s (CMAA) San Diego chapter has selected NewSchool of Architecture and Design (NSAD) as a “2013 Friend of the Industry.” The award recognizes a collaborative partner that has supported CMAA chapter activities and the construction management profession. The award was presented at the chapter’s Annual Awards Banquet April 25, 2013, along with scholarships to four NSAD Construction Management students that ranged from $500 to $5,000.

NSAD offers student interdisciplinary education opportunities in design-related fields such as architecture, construction management, digital media arts and interior design. The four NSAD Construction Management students who received scholarships from CMAA for their academic excellence were: Jake Jaenicke, Joseph Kovac Jr., Vincent Macias and German Morales, who are all students in NSAD’s Bachelor of Science in Construction Management campus-based program at NSAD and actively involved in the NSAD CMAA Student Chapter. At the awards banquet, several other NSAD Construction Management graduate and undergraduate students were also acknowledged for attaining the status of Construction Manager in Training (CMIT).

The “2013 Friend of the Industry” award was accepted by NSAD President Steve Altman and Linda Thomas-Mobley, NSAD Dean of Academic and Student Affairs, and former Chair of the Construction Management program. NSAD has gone “above and beyond in their support of our chapter as well as encouraging others to participate in chapter programs and activities,” according to a letter sent to NSAD on behalf of the CMAA San Diego chapter.

NSAD’s support of the construction management profession includes outreach with the construction management community and the development of academic programs to advance the profession. In addition to the NSAD Bachelor of Science in Construction Management, NSAD offers a Master of Construction Management online program taught by construction management experts and that uses integrated media in a convenient online format for working professionals and/or students worldwide. Students work in virtual project teams and the program emphasizes knowledge in new standards for building and construction materials, worker safety, energy efficiency, environmental protection and risk mitigation.

NSAD’s construction management program, directed by Acting Construction Management Program Chair George Welch, also recently received national recognition for a winning team of construction management and architecture students who competed in the Associated Schools of Construction (Regions 6 and 7) 2013 Student Competition near Reno, Nev., Feb. 5–8. NSAD’s student team won first place in the category of Virtual Design and Construction against student teams from 11 other schools around the country. This was NSAD’s first time participating in the competition, making the win particularly significant for the school’s relatively new construction management department, which started in 2010.
