Vertical Farm in La Sagrera, Barcelona

Vertical Greenhouse for intensive urban farming in La Sagrera, Barcelona

The project proposes the design of a space developed in height for urban intensive agriculture. Barcelona, for its mild, humid and constant climate throughout the year offers the perfect place for urban farming. It is also a city with a high gastronomic culture with a large food market activity since fresh products are much appreciated.

Furthermore, the recent burial of the high speed railways in La Sagrera that will connect Spain with France, on top of which a linear park will be designed, and the plan for a new neighbourhood with housing for 12,000 people gives coherence to the construction of this building thought as a new hybrid concept between infrastructure and architecture.

The building produces 40 tons of food per day and supplies most of the markets around the city through the subway at non operating hours targeting a 10% consumption of the particular chosen crops. At the same time the building acts as infrastructure to the neighbourhood, purifying 1dam3  of grey water sewage produced by the new 5600 houses in the neighbourhood, using it to feed the crops and producing 80MWh of energy back through the digestion of organic waste.
