Facade Project

This project focuses on adding a new facade to an existing structure, while looking at what a facade communicates about a building and its purpose.  There is also the study of the facade as it controls the entry of the elements into or out of a building.  The facade being designed in this project is a sixteen foot addition being added onto the front of Beatty Hall, a multi-use building on the Wentworth Institute of Technology campus.

This design concept was the weaving of two vertical planes that created a dual screening system.  The larger screen was a concrete with four inch by eight inch louvers, while the smaller wood screen had two layers with one inch square strips.  This facade includes a layer of glass closing the building off from the elements, but allowing indirect light from the north to enter the facade. These vertical planes weaving in and out of the facade create and define spaces within.  The design helps expand the existing program on some of the floors, while also creating new individual study spaces for students on other floors.
