Mitchell Physics Buildings for Texas A&M

The George P. Mitchell Physics Buildings at Texas A&M were designed to support physics instruction, research, and experimentation. Consisting of two interconnected buildings (the Institute for Fundamental Physics and Astronomy and the Physics Department), the new state-of-the art facilities
were located adjacent to A&M’s engineering buildings on an irregular triangular site. The design of the elliptical Institute building incorporated daylighting strategies and utilized a large central atrium space
as a return air path. The Department consisted largely of laboratories and classrooms, and has a roof garden irrigated by collected rainwater. Certifi ed LEED Silver, the physics buildings set new standards
for sustainable design on A&M’s campus and provided cutting-edge spaces for learning and scientific experimentation.
