BATES HOUSE ALISON AND PETER SMITHSON

These drawings are the analysis of a famous architecture designed by the architects Smithsons. It was a study during my academic year in Spain in the Architectural Construction course. The aim of the course was to train students in critical constructive reasoning, delving into the architectural and functional requirements, learning to explore the sensitivity of the material , their qualities and drawbacks, the technology system, and the entire process. Consider the idea of architectural construction detail as fact and relate globalizing architectural requirements, functional and technological aspects of the work.
The house for the Bates family at Burrows Lea Farm in Surrey was to occupy the smallest possible portion of the site, "so as not to interfere with the market garden surrounding it. There is thus no need for a private garden; instead a 'dishing ' is formed in the land and the car comes straight into the garage. The house is cantilevered over the dishing, sufficiently above the ground to get the full benefit of the excellent position and views over Surrey Downs".
