About

Jason Ivaliotis is a Senior Associate for the New York office of Handel Architects and is currently working on the design for two buildings in the Essex Crossing Development on the Lower East Side of Manhattan. He began his professional journey as a designer and educator at Miami University in 1999. Over the last decade he has gained a wealth of experience as a project designer and team leader for various architectural firms, completing a wide range of diverse international projects and competitions which include large scale urban planning, high rise architecture and commercial development, transit architecture, cultural and educational projects, civic spaces, retail and corporate interiors and product design. Jason holds a Bachelor of Arts in Architecture from Miami University where he graduated with Departmental Honors in 2003, and a Master of Architecture from Columbia University where he graduated with an Honor Award for Excellence in Design in 2007.

In 2008, Jason was appointed to the faculty of the Columbia University Graduate School of Architecture Planning and Preservation where he currently serves as an Adjunct Assistant Professor of Architecture. Jason’s ongoing research and experimentation at Columbia GSAPP explores the interplay between generative software platforms, physical modeling, virtual analysis and automated digital fabrication techniques. He currently teaches the course Fast Forward (a digital visualization seminar focusing on the development of interactive, rendered environments and mood based visualization techniques) and the course Beyond Prototype (an advanced fabrication seminar in the design of hybridized meshes). Operating with a keen focus on the exchange of information between the design laboratories of academia and those of professional practitioners, fabricators and software developers, he is constantly pursuing unique partnerships which merge academic research with design industry sponsorship.

Jason has been invited as a visiting critic at Columbia University, Pratt Institute, New Jersey Institute of Technology and Miami University and has lectured at Columbia University, Miami University, the University of Pennsylvania and the Center for Architecture in New York. Over the last decade, Jason has received multiple design awards and his work has been published and exhibited internationally. Throughout the course of his academic and professional endeavors, he approaches architecture as both a fine art and an applied science that remains fluid and versatile to serve the needs of an ever-changing society.
