PRINCETON, N.J. --

The Sukkah Village 2021 exhibit and competition, taking place throughout the municipality during the Jewish holiday of Sukkot (September 19-29) invites students in and from New Jersey to present innovative and original designs for a Sukkah, the traditional shelter that figures into Sukkot celebrations, as part of a design competition for the event.

The rules for the competition stipulate that  the sukkah can be built by an individual using materials and building methods that are sustainable and easily available. Each project will need to include details explaining the building method, ensuring that the structure can be built and taken apart with tools readily available. A board of architects, community partners and local clergy will select winning design submissions which will receive a stipend of $1,800 to build their Sukkah.

"The goal for Sukkot celebrants is to spend as much time as possible in the Sukkah," says Joshua Zinder, architect and Sukkah Village 2021 organizer, "at the very minimum eating the festive meals on the first two nights of the holiday within the shelter."

According to Zinder, managing partner of local design firm JZA+D and 2021 president of the state chapter of the American Institute of Architects (AIA-New Jersey) many of the issues and themes currently in the news are at the heart of what the Sukkot celebration symbolizes: homelessness, hunger, refugee crises, and sustainability, among others.

The competition is open to all New Jersey students -- high school, attending a New Jersey College, or a New Jersey resident attending an out-of-state school. Design proposals can be developed individually or in teams. (Team leaders must be NJ residents.)

NJ architecture firms and architects, along with selected winners, will build their Sukkahs as part of the Sukkah Village event taking place in September 2021 in Princeton NJ.
