Oliveira's Residence

Situated in the historical religious village of Fatima in Portugal, the building will be the residence for Pedro Oliveira & Marta Oliveira. The client’s principal requirement was to transform a neglected traditional Portuguese rural stone house plus its adjacent ruins, into a single building, connected through a modern extension.

The construction process will be divided into 2 phases, one, which is currently undergoing and another which will be developed at a later stage.

The proposal suggests the renovation/restoration of a decaying country-house plus its adjacent 4 centuries old ruins. The design transforms the interior spaces from a classic partitioned layout into a simplified open plan accommodation, while preserving the buildings original stone facade and traditional appeal.

One intends to modernize the way the building will be inhabited by implementing a series of up-to-date design strategies including reduced materiality, and progressive methodologies for energy consumption.

My proposal embraces the local tradition of understanding the exterior as part of the domestic space. This relationship, between interior and exterior goes beyond a visual connection, therefore, both front and backyard will feature leisure spaces, where social gatherings can be fulfilled, under the same comfort umbrella as the interior spaces.
