Passively Conditioned, Mid-Rise Cluster

Located in the hot, arid climate of Cairo, this proposed, high-density cluster is a marriage of commercial, residential, and retail spaces. Initially inspired by Mies van der Rohe's 1922 curvilinear Freidrichstrasse entry, the geometry of each cluster unit is also highly faceted in order to accelerate passive ventilation along every floor. A series of vertical tubes extend from the center of each unit upon which horizontal-axis turbines are fastened. These tubes drive dry air down by fan along unglazed water jugs to create cool air. This air is drawn in along tubes imbedded within each floor slab for cooling, as stale air is exhausted to the exterior along the facade. The development features a connected network of vegetative roof decks, allowing inhabitants to regularly stroll from deck to deck.
