Willoughby Townhouse

The Willoughby Townhouse Renovation consisted of an entire 4-story brownstone in the historic Clinton Hill District in Brooklyn, creating a duplex out of the parlor and garden floor for the owner and 2 apartments on the upper floors.

The design intent was to integrate elements of contemporary architecture while preserving the original spirit of the house.  One of the major elements of design was to address flexibility and to create a lighting strategy for the house, taking advantage of two existing skylights to bring natural light for the public and private functions.  The staircase skylight has been treated to bring natural light to the vertical circulation; the other skylight has been restored to give light to the top apartment that has smaller facade openings.  Furthermore, the interior of each apartment has been given a cove light system on the ceiling and on the vertical walls in the shape of "light beams" to introduce a homogeneous lighting solution that could be used to create atmosphere and general lighting.
