Reinterpreting Boundaries

The Colosseum is one of the most visited monuments in the world. Unfortunately, the surrounding areas and streets leading to this ancient site fail to acknowledge the circulation needs of locals and travelers.

The proposed solution will create a visual and tactile connection from Piazza del Colosseo to both Via Claudia and Via di San Gregorio while emphasizing 3 main goals:

- Architectural Quality:

Wider sidewalks, landscaping, and water features will direct the movement of people back to the Colosseum, while celebrating ancient remains in the area. The market design will add a modern layer to this historically significant district.

- Respect of the Environment:

The green cascade of seating surrounding the Colosseum will replace the existing hardscape. This will provide natural drainage and more vegetation within the piazza.

- Quality of Community Life:

Staircases and ramps will provide universal accessibility to the piazzas. These features, as well as functional green spaces, encourage more interaction between the Celio neighborhood and the Colosseum.
