Designed, detailed, and rendered using Revit, Spring 2009.

New Bedford is an area with a rich history. It used to be the shipping capital of the world before it fell on hard economic times. I attempted to reconnect the site with the urban fabric of its past. There are primary circulation paths on either side, both vehicular and pedestrian, that needed to have access to the site. I allowed these conditions to articulate themselves into the massing by creating a public sequence which connected the major circulation paths. After all of the appropriate considerations had been made, the resultant was a building with 4 articulated facades.

After understanding the context and establishing the massing, I broke up the site into quadrants according to sizes that matched various programmatic elements. The program includes a theatre, cafe, daycare, classrooms, gymnasium, pools, and exercise area. The major and minor axes divided the program, defining circulation and public spaces.
