Feeding Frenzy

Feeding Frenzy is an exploration in materiality, simple unit behavior, and how in mass these simple units generate form.

Starting with mylar, an extremely robust material that avoids creasing, a unit is designed to interlock with itself. Due to the inherent properties of plastic the unit uses designed appendages to flexibly weave into gaps in a reciprocal unit. As these units repeatedly interlock with themselves, shape begins to emerge.

At certain scales, however, unit aggregation becomes lethargic and uninspiring. Therefore by then running the units through specific algorithms, in this case a swarming algorithm mimicking ant movement, new dynamics of movement and directionality can be added to the design, creating both a top down and bottom up design simultaneously.
