Lens - Togs 3

2010

The TOGS (temporary outdoor gallery space) competition asks its participants to design a modular art pavilion that can be easily assembled, disassembled, shipped, and stored. These small galleries are intended to be utilized during Art Week Austin - clustered along 1st Street, providing spaces for local artists and craftspeople to display their work.

This entry placed as finalist, and focused on blurring the boundary between gallery and external environment. Modular panels composed of two different types of lenses comprised the skin. Convex lenses made up the majority of surface area, and served to enlarge and blur either the  art within or the environment outside, depending on one’s position. A band of concave lenses were placed at what is eye level on the exterior side. This allows passers by to see a focused  and arrayed representation of the work inside the TOGS. Sliding, translucent panels inside allow for another layer of variability as well as surface area for presentation.
