Building 13, Husain site, Shanghai, China

The Huishan mixed use Development, on a kilometer long site on the north shore of the Huangpu River extends eastward an extraordinary series of  urban designs that spring from the historic Bund district.  It is the latest project in a sequence that started with Shanghai Port International Cruise Terminal, and then the mixed use Gaoyang commercial and office development.

At Huishan, the continuity of the waterfront tradition is evoked in a new vision by the introduction of  a marina weaving its way between the buildings of a 300,000 m2 mixed use development, yielding public water related amenities in a park like setting and adding significant value to each building as it relates in its unique way to the Marina and the Huangpu river, with its spectacular views of the Pudong district and the Bund District.

The Huishan project also extends and helps define the reconstruction of Daiming Road as a new world class boulevard and catalyst for development of the entire north Bund District. Whether approached from the water or from the new boulevard the project synergistically energizes the further new urban possibilities.

Nine new  buildings to the west of this tower, ranging in height from 24 to 100 meters in height, also use the theme of energy efficient natural materials, especially terra cotta for sun control.

B13 consists of a paired 60 meter west office tower (B13A) of  16982 gross square meters, and a 42 meter east slab (B13B) of  8609 gross square meters (on a platform) and separated by an eight floor tall public glazed atrium.  The goal of the pairing is to create greater diversity and individuality of building elements and to increase their value for multiple users, compared to a single mass.

The use of terra cotta as a façade element for the west marina was established to help meet the city mandated 30% surface area rule for solid facade elements, to maximize the use of natural environmentally friendly materials, to provide a proven method of sun shading, and also to act as unifying design element for buildings B11, B12, B13, B14, and B15.
