Maunabo Mangrove Preserve

The Maunabo Mangroves park is an ecologically sensitive region, the only place in Puerto Rico with all four types of mangroves. Sea turtles also nest on its beaches and there is a historic
lighthouse at the very end of the site. The proposal was developed as an alternative to high development projects slated for the site. Trails, viewing towers and restoration for the lighthouse were designed by the community design studio. All the drawings and models were displayed in the
Puerto Rican Capitol Building and are currently in Maunabo’s cultural center. An ecological park
has not been built but dense development has also been stalled indefinitely.
