CRITICS: Vito Acconci, Jason Vigneri-Beane

COURSE OBJECTIVE: Near Future Scenarios

LOCATION: Manhattan, New York City

Evolutionary process in different aspects of life is affecting the definition of city and architecture and the way they relates to each other. In near future cities one will confront with a more ambiguous condition in built environment, which makes it difficult to separate parts from each other, buildings from pathways, streets from landscape, etc. In other words they may shape one entity with different meanings and functions embedded in superimposed “STRATA”. This hypothesis would result in a kind of randomness in spite of the internal order of each layer. The “deconstruction” of the parts is suggesting an “anti-hierarchical and anti-formalist” philosophy in the search for flexibility and aleatory quality which might be a more convincing response to the future condition of cities.
