Disabilities Pedestrian Access

Site:  The design appointed the problem of pedestrian traffic, specifically in areas of heavy vehicular traffic, around the Cal Poly San Luis Obispo campus

Project Description:  I was required to redesign or fabricate an existing pedestrian access point to enable a more smooth and safe pedestrian circulation

Project Details:  After discovering a pre-existing bus route that required pedestrians to cross four lanes of traffic, or walk two blocks to the nearest crosswalk, I decided on my specific location.  Between the intersections California and Santa Rosa streets along foothill.  An underpass for a creek bed allowed me to design both a footpath and a suspended foot bridge from the existing retaining wall and building elements already on site. The primary structure for both the walkway and footbridge was composed of a lightweight aluminum post and beam system.  Using the natural lay of the land with some minor cutting and filling, I was able to create the footpath with minimal costs and minimal time.  The suspended bridge used similiar construction methods, but the beams were able to be bolted into the existing face of the cinderblock retaining wall for additional support.  Extra support was added by means of cross framing using tension cables that would allow for large loads.   Perforated Corten steel was used as the paths primary building material, and gave a natural look by weathering, while contrasting the aluminum.  The design was acomplished using both a simplistic and modern approach with an innovative touch.
