Nili Portugali was born in Haifa, Israel in 1948. She is 7th generation descendent of a family living in the holy Kabbalah city of Safed since the early 19th century.

A well-known practicing Architect; senior lecturer; Researcher, published author& film director. Her multidisciplinary work both in practice and theory is closely connected to the holistic-phenomenological school of thought.

       She is a graduate of the prestigious Architectural Association School of Architecture (A.A), London (1973). She did postgraduate studied in architecture and Buddhism at the University of California, Berkeley, U.S.A (1981)and  film studies at Tel-Aviv University . She worked and participated in research with Prof. Christopher Alexander at the Center for Environmental Structure, Berkeley California.
     She was senior lecturer at the Bezalel Academy of Art and Design, Architectural Department, Jerusalem and taught at the Faculty of Architecture and Town Planning at the Technion, Israel Institute of Technology, Haifa.
     Her work focuses on both practice and theory and is closely connected to the holistic-phenomenological school of thought.
     Portugali won prizes in competitions. She is invited as guest lecturer to international conferences and leading universities. She participates in various exhibitions. She published many articles on architecture and her work is documented in professional magazines, in the press and on television.
      Her first published book: The Act of Creation and the Spirit of a Place. A Holistic-Phenomenological Approach to Architecture published by Edition Axel Menges / Stuttgart/London in 2006 was among the 24 books selected by the Royal Institute of British Architects International Book Award for the year 2007.
       She is a practicing architect working in Israel for more than 38 years.
Her firm is involved in a variety of projects in urban design, architecture, landscape design and interior design, disciplines she regards as one continuous system..  Her second new book published:  A Holistic Approach to Architecture. "The Felicja Blumenthal Music Center and Library", Tel Aviv / Am Oved Publishers Ltd,Tel Aviv 2011
   Her recent feature Hybrid film "And the alley she whitewashed in light blue" of which she wrote its script, directed, edited and did the production design, was world premiered at the International Mumbai film festival, India.

The film can be seen as the third of a trilogy following the buildings she designed as an architect and the published books she wrote.
