Project: the Manjushree Orphanage, Tawang, Northeast India.

Responsibilities include project schematics, construction documents and project coordination, along with fundraising, event planning and public relations.

Our project is an Academic Center designed based on the wishes of Lama Thupten Phuntsok, the head master of Manjushree Orphanage and Free School.
.
Lobsang Nyandak Zayul, Representative to His Holiness the Dalai Lama, has stated: "We are pleased to have learned of Lama Thupten Phuntsok's great commitment to the well-being and education of the needy children of this remote region, and that John Ullman's assistance and guidance will bring a suitable learning environment to strengthen the institutions curriculum. By providing excellent teaching facilities, the difficulties Manjushrees teachers face will be lessened, and subsequently life for these children will clearly be greatly enhanced."

Lama Thupten Phuntsok says that with the establishment of the Academic Center, the children of Manjushree will have a suitable place to hone their academic skills. The children will be taught in warm rooms, as the building is designed keeping in mind the regions harsh climate. The children will also experience a quiet library, which will provide the silence they will need for concentration.

The initial funding for the Project came from donations raised at AFTs May 2010 Light of Compassion Gala and Silent Auction held at the Rubin Museum of Art. We are pleased and honored that the building is finally complete!

Architecture for Tibet's good efforts are presently on pause, however, AFT will be carrying out other planned programs focused on sustainable development, organic farming and architecture in the future.

I have known John for four years now. He was my student in his second year of architecture school at Pratt Institute. In that studio I was impressed with John's maturity of purpose, his clarity of reason, and an almost magical intensity always capable of introducing the unexpected. John was not the conventional student.
.
He was my student again during his fourth year, in Rome, as a participant in the honors studio given there. Again his work was exemplary and unique. Perhaps more importantly though, was the way in which he embraced difference, applying his particular logic and experience to those contradictory yet familiar aspects of Italian culture.
.
Since his graduation last summer my partner and I have had the pleasure of having him work in our own studio. He has proved himself immediately to be a most capable and consistent contributor, assuming a variety of roles, most recently that of project architect for two Manhattan apartments.
.
One project is already under construction and here John has shown himself to be a direct and confident communicator with both contractors and sub-contractors with regard to the execution of the work. The second project is still in the drawing phase. Where John stands out is in his desire to know the orchestration of information.
.
John always brings a sincere and highly motivated curiosity to the intellectual and physical pursuits of the studio. His intensity and determination are absolutely genuine. Rarely do I find someone with such a combination of intuitive knowledgeability, naiveté (in the most positive sense) and talent.
.
He also brings that maturity of purpose; the ability to respect, analyze, consider, and to patiently persist in his working with a goal in mind. He is dedicated, someone that can be trusted to carry out what is right for the sake of the project.
.
John's portfolio of work reveals an obsessive and rational mind driven by a desire to write his own poetry of space. He has a meticulous desire to communicate tectonically, to understand and to be understood. It is clear to us that his best work is still building within.
.
For us, John has been an absolute pleasure to work with. It is our loss that we can keep him. He will make a difference.

In the middle of my academic career I was afforded the opportunity to work at Robert A.M. Stern's Office. I assisted on the design of the Hobby Center for the Performing Arts in Houston, Texas.

Responsibilities included fabrication assembly and layout; MIG and TIG welding on stainless steel, mild steel, aluminum, brass and bronze; high-end metal finishing; heavy hand-wrought blacksmithing (Gaudi - like railings and chandeliers, as well as traditional wrought iron railings).
