It was important for this project to consider the context and the historical significance of the existing Salk Institute building and to provide new buildings that not only help support the expanding Salk work population but also provide a more high tech sustainable work environment. The main focus was to honor the old Salk Institute building through the new addition as well as to truly celebrate nature, not only through sustainability and conservation, but by elevating the buildings’ new function of natural pharmaceutical research.
