Our work at the Connecticut Shore House involved the gut renovation of a modern summer house designed by the sculptor & painter Tony Smith in 1947.

Located on the Connecticut shoreline, 100 miles northeast of Manhattan, the house is perched atop a massive granite outcropping. From this location, 60 feet above sea level, the site commands sweeping views of Long Island Sound.

The 'house' was originally three separate structures, a main house, a guest house, and a studio, arranged around a saltwater swimming pool and concrete deck which act as a large outdoor room during the summer.

The renovation took place in several phases. After extensive structural repairs and improvements were completed, the exterior of each building was returned to its original condition by replacing all exterior finishes, windows, and doors. Two awkward 1950's additions were surgically removed, and the house and studio were linked with a new subterranean passageway. Finally, the interior of the guest house was restored to its original condition, while the house and studio interiors were rethought to meet the year round needs of the new owners.
