MARSHAK SCIENCE BUILDING

DIAGNOSING THE PROBLEM
GLASS BOX RAINCOAT
KEEPING THE BUILDING WORKING

The 13- story, half-million sq. ft. Marshak Science Building at City University of New York required new mechanical systems as well as solutions for its spalling concrete at the façade. Over the last 20 years DASNY have tried various restoration methods to control spalling concrete. Project scope was developed based on detailed surveys and close inspections of exposed lt. wt. concrete surfaces. The long term solution is to enclose the existing structure in glass box. First to repair spalling lightweight concrete columns and spandrel areas that threatened the building’s structural integrity. After repairs to the existing structure, a curtain wall façade is proposed to surround the building and provide further weather-proofing. The building houses college’s research and teaching laboratories and is planned to remain occupied during construction.  The design of the exterior facades will provide a new identity for the most dominant structure at this campus.
