Saucier + Perrotte Architects design for the Complexe Sportif Saint-Laurent wins the American Architecture Prize for Recreational Architecture

The Complexe Sportif Saint-Laurent in Montreal, designed by Saucier + Perrotte Architects, opened earlier this year and has recently been announced the winner of the American Architecture Prize for Recreational Architecture.

Situated in the Marcel Laurin Park in the Saint Laurent borough, north of the Montreal Island, the building stands between a high school and an arena and hosts various sport and leisure facilities.

Cahier d'Exercices by Saucier + Perrotte Architectes

Cahier d’Exercices is located at the entrance level of the historic Ross warehouse-store. The stone façade, its cast iron columns, and an expansive brick wall (punctuated with pieces of wood and metal) that runs the length of the store recall the 19th Century building’s industrial past as a retailer of large tissues, leathers and furs.

Crossing the threshold, the visitor is invited to explore the boutique by the clever use of a “degradé” — or gradient effect — on the ceiling. The colour changes gradually from a reflective, latex-like black to a pure diaphanous white, drawing visitors toward a reflective, opalescent mirror that extends the perspective of the space.

Placed at distinct intervals and delicately suspended from the ceiling, the racking system was custom designed by the architect to permit the clothing displayed to be perceived as a changing and evolving building material. Earlier this month, we published the winners in the competition for a new cultural venue in Montreal's Verdun Borough with Les Architectes FABG taking home the First Prize. The Mayor of Montreal, Gérald Tremblay, recently unveiled the winning project in the architecture competition for the new indoor soccer center at the Saint-Michel Environmental Complex (SMEC). The jury has chosen the concept developed by Saucier + Perrotte / Hughes Condon Marler Architects from among the four submitted by the finalist firms.
