Ohio State begins search for the next Howard E. LeFevre ‘29 Emerging Practitioner Fellow

Following last week’s look at an opening for an Assistant Professor for AI in the Built Environment at the University of Florida, we are using this week’s edition of our Job Highlights series to explore an opportunity on Archinect Jobs for the Howard E. LeFevre ‘29 Emerging Practitioner Fellowship at the Ohio State University.

The fellowship, overseen by the university’s Knowlton School of Architecture, offers the “opportunity and resources for an emerging practitioner to pursue an advanced research project directed toward expanding the boundaries of the discipline.” In addition to their core research work, the successful applicant for the nine-month fellowship will be asked to teach design studios related to their topic and to prepare and present a public exhibition.

Ohio State researchers use machine learning to create 3D digital models of lost historic neighborhoods

A team of researchers from The Ohio State University has developed a machine learning technique that converts old urban maps into three-dimensional digital models. According to the team, the models could potentially revolutionize research involving historic neighborhoods and the economic impact of their demolition.

The study, recently published in the journal PLOS ON, involved extracting and digitizing data from Sanborn Fire Insurance maps. The maps, created during the 19th and 20th centuries and frequently updated, were used by fire insurance companies to estimate their liabilities in about 12,000 U.S. cities and towns.

"We now have the ability to unlock the wealth of data that are embedded in these Sanborn fire atlases," said Ohio State Geography Professor Harvey Miller, a co-author of the study. "It enables a whole new approach to urban historical res...

Today, Archinect is continuing our Get Lectured series with a look at the events taking place this semester on the campus of the Knowlton School of Architecture at the Ohio State University in Columbus.

The spring has already seen appearances from Charles Renfro, Craig Dykers, Elissa Iturbe, Deanna van Buren, and Todd Gannon as part of the Baumer Lecture series, which will continue with UNC Chapel Hill professor Nichola Lowe on March 22 followed by a visit from Georgia Tech’s Catherine Ross on March 29.

The next month will see the continuation of the Baumer series with a lecture from Seattle-based GGN Associate Azzurra Cox on April 5. Her visit precedes the series’ conclusion with a presentation from the school’s 2022-23 LeFevre Fellow Georgina Baronian on April 21.

The Austin E. Knowlton School of Architecture at the Ohio State University has announced its Autumn 2022 Baumer Series, which takes place at the school’s Gui Auditorium from September thru November.

The school shares that this semester’s invited guests will each discuss “how their work considers and contends with interdisciplinary geographies—communities of labor, technology, nonhuman life, and politics both global and local” surrounding a theme of “Future Geographies.”

The Baumer Series kicked off in September with lectures from MIT M.Arch Program Director and Matter Design director Brandon Clifford on September 14, Yuts founding member of the Geography of Robots on September 21, and Harvard GSD professor Antoine Picon on October 5.

Ohio State researchers discover new method for designing soundproof spaces

A new study by researchers out of The Ohio State University investigates a different kind of design for absorbing vibrations that could better soundproof materials.

Ryan Harne, senior author of the paper and former associate professor of mechanical engineering at Ohio State, along with former Ohio State doctoral student Sih-Ling Yeh, tested how well built-in resonators handled vibrations under a variety of scenarios. Resonators are devices that use spring-like oscillation to control and change vibrations. Some absorb and neutralize them, and others amplify and direct them to specific places. They’re present in some vehicles, which use them to limit the sound emitted from a car’s muffler. Bridges and buildings also utilize them to limit noise and movement.

Contrary to previous studies relating to resonators, which focused on adding one to an existing structure or vehicle part, Harne and Yeh considered embedding resonators directly into a material, rather than adding it later.

Knowlton SoA exhibition examines architecture’s role in the Great Lakes Megalopolis

A new exhibition at the Knowlton School of Architecture on The Ohio State University campus aims to explore the work of The Great Lakes Architectural Expedition, a fictional public architecture office that takes Lake Erie as its principal client.

Created by Knowlton LeFevre Visiting Assistant Professor of Architecture Galen Pardee, the exhibition uses archival models, drawings, documents, and studies to explore "the organizational structure of the Great Lakes Architectural Expedition itself, as well as early attempts by the Expedition’s Lake Erie Board to establish their roles as public advocates and draft the contours of non-human architect-client relationships," according to exhibition text.

Landscape architect Dorothée Imbert picked to lead Knowlton School of Architecture

Landscape Architect and educator Dorothée Imbert has been named as the new Director of the Knowlton School of Architecture at The Ohio State University.

Imbert will take up a four-year term starting Fall 2020 and will follow in the footsteps of Michael B. Cadwell, FAIA, the current director who has served for nine years.

According to a university statement, Imbert has served as landscape architecture faculty at the school since 2013, when she joined the institution as the inaugural Hubert C. Schmidt ’38 Chair in Landscape Architecture. Prior to this experience, Imbert established the landscape architecture program at the Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts at Washington University in St. Louis and spent time teaching at the Graduate School of Design at Harvard University.
