The Architectural League of New York appoints Jacob R. Moore as its new Executive Director

The Architectural League of New York has named Jacob R. Moore as its next Executive Director, following a thorough national search. Moore succeeds Rosalie Genevro, who announced her decision to step down last year after leading the organization for nearly 40 years.

“Jacob brings tremendous passion and a deep knowledge of the most important forces and issues impacting the built environment today,” said Mario Gooden, President of The League’s board of directors. “His vision for the future of The League and his commitment to equity, spatial justice, and the environment make him the ideal person to shape our next chapter.”

Moore will assume the position after most recently serving as the Associate Director of the Temple Hoyne Buell Center for the Study of American Architecture at Columbia University’s GSAPP. Columbia GSAPP seeks a Director of Making Studio to lead their digital fabrication activities

Following last week’s look at an opening for an Intermediate Architectural Designer at Seed the North, we are using this week’s edition of our Job Highlights series to explore an open role on Archinect Jobs for the Director of Making Studio at Columbia University.

Reporting to the Dean of Columbia GSAPP, the role calls for an individual who will promote the GSAPP’s pedagogy and student engagement in digital fabrication. Among the responsibilities for the role are to “manage fabrication activities from small-scale massing models to full-scale building details” in the school’s Fabrication Shop, to guide and advise students on project execution in the shop, and to oversee student use of a wide variety of materials including wood, plastic, and metal.

Columbia GSAPP establishes new James Stewart Polshek Scholarship in honor of its former Dean

Former Columbia GSAPP dean James Stewart Polshek has been posthumously honored with a new endowed scholarship in recognition of the commitment to design excellence and social causes he embodied while helming the school for fifteen years.

The Ennead founder passed away in September and was subsequently remembered with a foundational gift of $125,000 from the firm that was meant to keep alive his enduring legacy as both an architect and educator. The new $350,000 total fund will thus be given in perpetuity to an M.Arch student in their final year of study whose work demonstrates the intellectual rigor and social concern Polshek strove for beginning with his appointment in 1972.

Architect Amale Andraos debuts first-ever jewelry collection for Judith Ripka

“The challenge was adjusting to the scale,” Andraos said. “When I first started sketching, the pieces were much bigger. I remember the reaction — the team was very excited about the ideas but I wasn’t computing the budget,” adding that the process of design is “always the same across scales, but this experience was very different because the scale of jewelry and the way it relates to the body is so precise.”

Andraos, who stepped down as Dean of Columbia's GSAPP last May, told WWD that her inspiration to make jewelry for the first time came from her hometown of Beirut’s Art Deco tradition. Other architects like Elena Manferdini and Rossana Hu have contributed designs for the Judith Ripka brand. Pieces from Andraos’ new Ayah Collection retail for between $550 and $1,995. The WORKac co-founder will now rejoin the faculty in Morningside Heights in September after a yearlong sabbatical.

A restructuring at the top of Columbia University's Graduate School of Architecture and Urban Planning (GSAPP) has been announced to coincide with the end of outgoing dean Amale Andraos' tenure.

Weiping Wu will now serve as GSAPP’s interim dean, while Mario Gooden is the new interim M.Arch graduate program director, replacing Andraos.

Wu was previously the director of the M.S. and Ph.D. in Urban Planning programs and brings to her new position more than twenty years of academic and professional experience. Prior to joining the GSAPP faculty in 2016, Wu served as Chair of the Department of Urban and Environmental Policy and Planning at Tufts University.

Her research has been focused on the urbanization of developing countries and China in particular. She has published several books and is the current president of the Association of Collegiate Schools of Planning (ACSP), which represents a consortium of educational institutions that offer credentials in urban and regional planning....

Mabel O. Wilson to receive National Building Museum’s Vincent Scully Prize

Architect, critic, cultural historian, and current Columbia GSAPP faculty member Mabel O. Wilson has been named as this year’s winner of the National Building Museum’s prestigious annual Vincent Scully Prize recognizing “excellence in practice, scholarship, or criticism in architecture, historic preservation, and urban design.”

The award, named after the late architecture historian, has been given out every year since 1999 and will now honor Wilson as its 23rd recipient. Wilson joins a list of past winners that includes fellow writers Jane Jacobs and Paul Goldberger as well as other important voices like the architect Phyliss Lambert and television commentator Charlie Rose.

Amale Andraos steps down as Dean of Columbia GSAPP

Today, academic and architectural practitioner Amale Andraos announces her decision to step down as Dean of Columbia University's Graduate School of Architecture, Planning, and Preservation. After succeeding Mark Wigley as Dean in 2014, Andraos has dedicated her time towards serving and improving the GSAPP community. During her seven-year tenure, she also ran her practice WORKac along with her husband, Dan Wood.

Keen on strengthening the institution's connectivity to the city and fostering interdisciplinary collaborations between GSAPP and other disciplines, Andraos' continued involvement with the university will continue. In her open letter to the community, she notes that she will continue to serve the GSAPP community as a Special Advisor to the President. "Climate Change is one of the main reasons I accepted to serve as Dean seven years ago [...] I will be able to continue to advocate for our disciplines' urgent transformations so that they may help address the challenges already...

Now in its third edition, the Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture (ACSA) and the Temple Hoyne Buell Center for the Study of American Architecture at Columbia University announce the winners of this year's 2021 Course Development Prize in Architecture, Climate Change, and Society.

The jury selected five courses "that seek the kind of realism that redefines problems and leaves room for imagination. The courses will reach out to neighbors to cultivate skills fostering a more resilient society." $50,000 in prize money will be split amongst each winner. In addition to funding, each course will receive support to lead their course at their host institution within the next two years.

GSAPP establishes $1 million Norma Merrick Sklarek Scholars Fund to support DEI in graduate study

Dean Amale Andraos announced this month that GSAPP will commit $1 million to establish the Norma Merrick Sklarek '50 B.Arch Scholars Fund, intended to promote diversity, inclusion, and equity towards access for graduate study.

Sklarek was the first Black woman to become a registered architect in the State of New York. After graduating from Columbia University, she worked at the Department of Works for New York City and later accepted a position at SOM before moving to Los Angeles for a position at Gruen Associates.

While at Gruen, Sklarek was named the firm's Director in 1966 before transitioning to work at Welton Becket's firm as the organization's Vice President. Moreover, Sklarek became the first Black woman to receive a fellowship by the AIA in 1980 after which she founded Siegel, Sklarek, Diamond with Margot Siegal and Katherine Diamond.

Architect, historian, and educator Mabel O. Wilson has been named as the 2020 Distinguished Alumni Award recipient by the University of Virginia (UVA) School of Architecture.

Wilson graduated from UVA with a Bachelor of Science in Architecture in 1985, and has been selected to receive the prestigious award among other "exceptional graduates from the School of Architecture who have demonstrated creativity, innovation, leadership, and vision through their distinguished body of work, within the professional, academic, civic, or artistic realms, as well as their service to the University of Virginia," according to the school's website.

Black Columbia GSAPP faculty and students push school for comprehensive reforms

A growing chorus of Black students and faculty members at prestigious universities across the country are pushing for substantive change with regards to the persistent lack of diversity and representation within these institutions.

Two weeks ago, following a blistering letter from the African American Student Union and AfricaGSD student groups at Harvard University, Harvard Graduate School of Design Dean Sarah Whiting published a list of initiatives the school would undertake in coming months to begin to address these concerns. Students at Yale, Rice University, and many other schools have also published open letters imploring school administrators to take basic, concrete steps toward incorporating and valuing the work, scholarly contributions, and perspectives of Black students, faculty, critics, and academics.

The Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture (ACSA) and the Temple Hoyne Buell Center for the Study of American Architecture at Columbia University have announced the winning entries of the 2020 Course Development Prize in Architecture, Climate Change, and Society.

The competition, launched in 2019, aims to bring $50,000 in funding to five university teams that are each tackling a different facet of the climate crisis through cross-disciplinary research that proposes "methods and themes that innovate within their institutional setting" while also "asking hard questions of students that are equal in weight to the hard questions being asked of society as it grapples with the intertwined causes and effects of climate change."

With the new year (and new semester) just getting under way, now is as good a time as any to take in a good architecture exhibition.

We have collected a few of the most interesting exhibitions currently (or soon-to-be) on view at four university campuses across the country, highlighting curatorial efforts by firms that include NEMESTUDIO and Architecture Office. GSAPP launches interdisciplinary affordable housing lab

The Columbia University Gradate School of Architecture, Planning, and Preservation has launched a new interdisciplinary research initiative called the Columbia GSAPP Housing Lab. The lab is to be led by GSAPP dean Amale Andraos.

Architect and GSAPP associate professor Hilary Sample has also been named to the school’s first endowed professorship position. GSAPP's new IDC Foundation Professorship of Housing Design is made possible by a $2 million donation from the Institute of Design and Construction Foundation, a group that "provides grants to educational institutions in Greater New York City to advance research and the training of students in fields relating to architectural design, engineering, and building construction," according to the IDC website.

This Friday, the University of Pennsylvania will hold Designing a Green New Deal, a day-long symposium aimed at articulating a design perspective for "a still-abstract set of proposals for decarbonizing the economy, eliminating poverty, creating green, working-class jobs, and retrofitting communities for the coming effects of climate change."

New Museum appoints V. Mitch McEwen as curator of IdeasCity initiative

The New Museum announced today the appointment of V. Mitch McEwen as Curator of IdeasCity, the museum's initiative exploring the future of cities. McEwen is the principal and cofounder of A(n) Office, a collaborative of design studios in Detroit and New York exploring the intersection of architecture and exhibition.

IdeasCity is a creative and collaborative enterprise operating through conferences, workshops, commissions, projects, and exhibitions in order to investigate key issues and proposes solutions. The Curator is a two-year appointment linked to the biennial presentation of IdeasCity in New York and is responsible for the two-year cycle leading up to this presentation.

As Curator of IdeasCity, McEwen will head up the 2018–19 cities and launch an open call for cities around the world to apply for the 2020–21 cycle. The next IdeasCity will take place in Toronto on September 15, 2018, in partnership with the Bentway.

Columbia GSAPP Dean Amale Andraos announced today that Andrés Jaque will be the new director of the school's Master of Science in Advanced Architectural Design program, effective June 1, 2018. As founder of the Office for Political of Innovation and a teacher of advanced design studios at GSAPP since 2013, Jaque will succeed Associate Professor Enrique Walker, who has directed the program since 2008.

The three-semester Advanced Architectural Design program is for outstanding students who already have a bachelor's or M.Arch degree, and is best known for offering students a framework through which they can explore professional and academic concerns. Columbia GSAPP launches the nation's first Ph.D in Historic Preservation

The Columbia University Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation (Columbia GSAPP) announced today that it will be launching a new Ph.D. Program in Historic Preservation—the first of its kind in the U.S. GSAPP has been a leader in the field of preservation education since it established the first Master in Historic Preservation program back in 1964. The introduction of the new program will set the standard for doctoral level education, provide intellectual leadership by training future generations of preservation scholars, and expand the discipline’s range.

GSAPP displays unusual + intriguing photographs of famed architectural models with "Stagecraft: Models and Photos"

Photographer James Ewing was given a studio and several weeks to creatively photograph architectural models made by students of the Columbia GSAPP between 1994 and 2003. The resulting work will form a show, "Stagecraft: Models and Photos," that opens at the GSAPP on February 9th.

Featuring photographs of models of structures such as Le Corbusier's Pavillon des Temps Nouveaux, Norman Foster's Renault Distribution Center, and Peter Zumthor's Saint Benedict Chapel among others, the photographs avoid the atmosphere of your typical two-in-the-morning-on-a-work-day professional studio snaps, instead investing each of these models with unusual drama.

Because the models and the photographer are so removed from the original architectural design process, the work is necessarily interpretive. These are miniature echo chambers of history, models of models of structures some of these students undoubtedly visited in real life, photographed against occasionally surreal backdrops.

Columbia GSAPP and the Avery Architectural and Fine Arts Library host a collection of 20,000 images of 20th century architecture projects

Are you looking for design inspiration for a new project? Historical references to bolster your design proposal? The Columbia GSAPP Visual Resources Collection (VRC) and the Avery Architectural and Fine Arts Library host an online collection of 20,000 images of 20th century architectural projects. Underway for nearly two years now, the project includes drawings, images and photographs, primarily of modernist projects spanning from 1871 to 2013.

Unbuilt projects, like the Chicago Tribune Tower and the Lenin Library, are showcase alongside a collection of built projects. In total, the archive includes 1,000 projects from 55 countries. The project was curated by Ayesha Ghosh, who was assisted by Carsten Rodin and James Brillon.

The archive has a Plans and Sections project alongside collections of digital images, 35mm slides, and lantern slide formats. There’s also VHS and DVD recording of over twenty years of lectures hosted by GSAPP. Unfortunately, you’ll need a Columbia email to access...

Reinhold Martin hosts contentious 'House Housing' panel, provoking discussion on inequality, real estate and architecture

"House Housing; An Untimely History of Architecture and Real Estate", a globally touring exhibit, has finally arrived in its place of conception, New York City. After first appearing at the 2014 Venice Biennale, “House Housing” has popped up in Chicago, Berlin and Los Angeles. The exhibit opened this past Tuesday, July 12 at the AIA New York Center for Architecture.

Researched and organized by Columbia University’s Temple Hoyne Buell Center for the Study of American Architecture, the opening was accompanied by a panel discussion moderated by Reinhold Martin, Director of the Buell Center. Martin was joined by Patrice Derrington, Director of the Real Estate Development Program at Columbia, GSAPP and Lissa So, Founding Partner at Marvel Architects.

Columbia GSAPP names Weiping Wu Director of Urban Planning Program

Effective July 1, Wu became the new Director of the Master of Science in the Urban Planning program at Columbia's GSAPP, as announced by current dean, Amale Andraos. In a press release issued by GSAPP, Wu is referred to as one of the "top scholarly experts on Chinese urbanization", focusing on issues of migration, housing and infrastructure.

Andraos described Wu as "that rare scholar who has the ability to bridge theory and practice and is committed to advancing the field towards the bettering of our built environment.” Previously, Wu was the Chair of the Urban and Environmental Policy and Planning Department at Tufts University, and editor of the Journal of Planning Education and Research. She will continue in her role as President and President-Elect of the Association of Collegiate Schools of Planning (ACSP).
