Satirical “Folly for London” competition mocks Garden Bridge project

As controversy carries on over the notorious Garden Bridge by Heatherwick Studio proposed for London's South Bank, some opposers of the project are expressing their discontent with good ol' British satire in the soon-to-be-launched "Folly for London" competition. If you have a cheeky sense of humor, you'll have fun in this one.

UPDATE, June 15, 2015: Will Jennings, artist and initiator of the "Folly for London" competition, sent us this statement to further explain the cause until the design ideas contest officially opens for entries.

Details of the competition will be announced in due course and we will seek entries from across professional architectural and design circles, established and amateur artists, citizens of London and anyone else with an interest in the capital - adults and children alike - before a panel of judges, including architecture writer Owen Hatherley, will meet to decide the best follies.

The website is not only intended as a ‘home’ for the competition, with details being added as we get closer to the launch, but will also have writings and responses to the many issues around the city, politics, finances and architecture which are raised by the problematic Garden Bridge project.

BUSTLER’S NEW CALL FOR ENTRIES: Share your Folly 2015 non-finalist proposals!

In the annual Folly competition, the Socrates Sculpture Park and the Architectural League of New York invite early-career architects and designers to bring out their eccentric side and propose a contemporary architectural folly. The winning design is then constructed and temporarily installed at the Socrates Sculpture Park throughout the summer months.

The official Folly 2015 competition is already done, but Archinect and our sister site Bustler want to provide an additional platform to showcase and celebrate participants' non-winning Folly entries in our latest Call for Non-Finalists.

TO SHARE YOUR COMPETITION ENTRY:

You will have to create an Archinect people or firm profile. Just click the "Log in/Join" button on the left-hand side in the black navigation bar.

If you already have an Archinect profile, you're one step ahead. Simply log into your account and upload your submission to your Project Portfolio. (Make sure to mention the word "Folly" somewhere in the project title!) Don't have a Project Portfolio yet? Click here to get started.

Ibañez Kim Studio wins Folly 2015 with "Torqueing Spheres"

The architectural folly is an opportunity for architects to bring out their eccentric side in the design process, which makes it an entertaining approach when creating a (temporary) public installation. In this spirit, the Socrates Sculpture Park and The Architectural League of New York hosts the international Folly competition. Launched in 2012, the competition calls for early-career architects and designers to submit proposals that are described as contemporary interpretations of the architectural folly. The winning entry is then constructed as a temporary public outdoor installation at the Socrates Sculpture Park in Long Island City, New York City.

Cambridge and Philadelphia-based practice Ibañez Kim Studio was announced as the Folly 2015 winner with their design, "Torqueing Spheres". IK Studio's distinctive proposal features a series of connected spherical forms that form a social-interactive space.

Folly 2014 winner SuralArk to be installed at Socrates Sculpture Park in May

Out of 170 submissions, Austin+Mergold's SuralArk recently won Folly 2014. Co-sponsored by The Architectural League of New York and Socrates Sculpture Park, the annual competition invites young architects and designers worldwide to propose contemporary interpretations of the traditional architectural folly. The jury also selected 10 Notable Entries. SuralArk will be designed and built at the Socrates Sculpture Park in Long Island City, NY starting May 11 til Aug. 3, 2014.

Rem Koolhaas, Ai Weiwei, Superflex and others take part in Gwangju Folly Project

Architectural follies impose on our assumptions of what architecture is and what it should be -- what is function, what is beauty, where do private and public space meet. Gwangju Folly II, part of the Gwangju Biennale Foundation, highlights the politicization of public space through multiple folly-interventions in Gwangju. The project includes follies by Ai Weiwei, Rem Koolhaas and Ingo Niermann, Superflex, Raqs Media Collective, David Adjaye and Taiye Selasi, among others, this November 10-11.

Artistic Director Nikolaus Hirsch, with curators Philipp Misselwitz and Eui Young Chun, focus the follies on the contentiousness of public space, and its operation on the global scale. Positioned throughout the city, some follies are mobile (Ai Weiwei's "Cubic-meter Food Cart", a rumination on South Korea's pojangmachas) while others highly site-specific (Rem Koolhaas and Ingo Niermann's "The Vote" is installed in a high-traffic commercial area).
