Get Lectured: Syracuse University, Spring '24

The Syracuse University School of Architecture has shared its public speaking information as part of our Get Lectured look at different events in store on campus for the Spring semester.

Oberlander Prize winner Julie Bargmann will visit campus on February 13 as part of the Syracuse Symposium series and be followed by an appearance from Rachely Rotem of MODU, who will deliver the L.C. Dillenback Lecture February 15. She is followed by a lecture from assistant professor Jess Myers on February 16. A workshop with UT Austin SoA Associate Dean Korey Bieg follows on February 22, and the next month begins with a visit from current Harvard Loeb Fellow Adi Kumar on March 1.

March continues with a special presentation on Chinese calligraphy with Shishu Su on March 22. His appearance precedes the The Landscape of Women’s Bodily Autonomy symposium on March 26. Get Lectured, Architect's ongoing highlight of public lectures and events happening at architecture schools across the country, continues with a look today at what’s happening at the Syracuse University School of Architecture this Fall.

The school’s sesquicentennial year begins with a discussion with the former and the incoming Harry der Boghosian Fellows Lily Chishan Wong and Christina Chi Zhang on September 12. Class of 1973 alum Patrick Ahearn returns to campus on September 19, followed by a September 21 presentation from Drawing Architecture Studio principals Li Han and Hu Yan detailing the studio “A Little Bit of Syracuse” they taught last spring to a group of ten students.

The month continues on September 28 with D. Syracuse School of Architecture, SUNY-ESF researchers receive $100,000 grant to study the racial wealth gap in the United States

A trio of researchers from the Syracuse University School of Architecture and the SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry (SUNY-ESF) have been awarded a new $100,000 competitive grant for their examination of root causes laden in the built environment that are underpinning the growing racial wealth gap in the United States.

Syracuse’s Associate Dean for Research, Eliana Abu-Hamdi, Associate Professor Iman Fayyad, and SUNY-ESF landscape architecture assistant professor Daniel Cronan were recently awarded the grant for their project “Closing the Racial Wealth Gap through Environmental Justice and Participatory Design.”

The funding was made possible through the Lender Center for Social Justice. Researchers say it will help them achieve their project’s aim of identifying a list of positive changes that can be enacted in the most heavily-impacted communities. As the Spring term unfolds, Archinect is looking at all the exciting events at architecture schools nationwide with our Get Lectured series. Today we look at events and speakers coming to Syracuse University’s School of Architecture this semester beginning with South Korean critic Jooeun Sung, who visited campus on January 24 to speak about notions of empathy and values as they relate to architecture.

Desegregation activist and Biden Administration appointee Sara Bronin on January 26. Following Bronin’s visit precedes a guest lecture from historian and preservation specialist Jeffrey A. “Free” Harris on February 3, sponsored by the school’s National Organization of Minority Architecture Students (NOMAS) chapter. His appearance will be followed by an alumni panel discussion on February 10, and a presentation in New York City from Harvard GSD faculty member Ruo Jia on February 13.

Archinect continues its Get Lectured series by highlighting the Fall 2022 lectures and public events held by Syracuse University School of Architecture.

September 8 was the exhibition opening of 2021-22 Harry der Boghosian Fellow Leen Katrib. Caitlin Meives and Christopher Brandt presented the Francis E. Hares Preservation Lecture on September 13. New York-based author, editor, and columnist, Matt Shaw presented a lecture on September 15.

UC San Diego's Kelema Lee Moses, Ph.D. will present a lecture discussing urban island design and curatorial response on September 27. Soft Firm co-founder and D. Kenneth Sargent Visiting Critic Lexi Tsien will showcase projects and examples of collective/DIY building and their relationship to public space and the public realm on September 29. Syracuse University names Leen Katrib the 2021-22 Harry der Boghosian Fellow

Established in 2015, the Harry der Boghosian Fellowship is a one-of-a-kind program initiated by Syracuse University. The program provides emerging faculty members and designers early in their careers the opportunity to spend a year "developing a body of design research based on an area of interest while teaching at the School of Architecture."

Created in memory of Harry der Boghosian '54 by his sister Paula der Boghosian '64, this year's Fellow is architectural designer Leen Katrib. Born in Sharjah, United Arab Emirates, Katrib received her Bachelor of Architecture degree with honors from the University of Southern California and earned her M.Arch from Princeton University. She has worked for architectural practices such as Marvel, LTL Architects (Lewis.Tsurumaki.Lewis), McEwen Studio, Peter Marino Architect, and OMA. Syracuse University's Lawrence Chua named among 34 Getty Scholar grantees

Lawrence Chua, an assistant professor at the Syracuse University School of Architecture, has been awarded a 2020-21 Getty Scholar Grant from the Getty Research Institute (GRI) to study "transregional histories of utopia and the architecture and urban culture of southeast Asia."

According to the Syracuse University News, this year's research cohort is focused on pursuing investigations that seek to deepen scholarly efforts around the topic of "the fragment" and are set to focus on objects of study that remain in less-than-whole forms. The research also considers intact art and cultural objects as "fragments" of the larger cultures that generated these items. The Syracuse website states, "Incoming Getty Scholars are invited to address both the creation and reception of fragments, their mutability and mobility, and their valuation and consequence throughout history."

Syracuse University names Liang Wang as Boghosian Fellow for 2020

Architect and urban designer Liang Wang has been selected by Syracuse University as the 2020-21 Harry der Boghosian Fellow.

The fellowship will take Liang from Cambridge, Massachusetts, where he is a current Doctor of Design candidate at Harvard University, to the Syracuse University School of Architecture, where he will teach one studio and two professional electives. Wang's research focus is situated around the history and theory of urban form, space, and politics within the realm of superblock development and the "architecture and idea of the city in East Asia," according to a press release.

Professor Kermit Lee Jr., Syracuse School of Architecture's first black graduate, honored in student organized exhibition

Kermit Lee Jr., died in 2018 and was the first Black graduate of Syracuse University’s School of Architecture. In dedication, Syracuse’s National Organization of Minority Architecture Students chapter created an exhibit honoring his legacy and named it “The Living Room Conversation: In Memory of Professor Kermit J. Lee Jr.”

Curated by architecture students Benson Joseph and Parinda Pin Sangkaeo, The Living Room Conversation features Professor Lee's drawings from his time as a student and further chronicles his life and legacy. According to The Daily Orange, the exhibition was split into four parts, each a different season in Lee's life: student, teacher, architect, and person.

Syracuse University student and faculty work: a review of Trans(inter)ference

What is iconic in architecture? It's a debate that will never be settled precisely because the definition of "icon" is perennially changing to reflect the culture from which it derives. An icon, after all, is not necessarily a classic, and this inherent tension is partly what fuels Trans(inter)ference, an installation designed by Maya Alam in collaboration with Daniele Profeta and three Syracuse University students: Emily Greer, Waralee Kaewkoon and Thomas Byung H. Kim.

Made up from repurposed VHS tape strung over a frame system that has a rectangular series of partitions and a curved awning-like flourish, the work seems to never quite come into focus due to the fluttering of the tape. This constant subtle motion means that there is no one "right" way to perceive it: each observer's experience is free from a predetermined context. In this sense, Trans(inter)ference achieves its stated goal of being "an in-between object that weaves subject, object, and context into one."
