Albuquerque mayor declares June 24th Antoine Predock Day

In a surprise announcement, Albuquerque Mayor Tim Keller declared June 24, 2021 “Antoine Predock Day” – honoring the work of internationally acclaimed architect, Antoine Predock. The declaration came during an event held by the UNM School of Architecture and Planning celebrating Predock’s 85th birthday.

While originally from Lebanon, Missouri, Predock has stated that he considers himself an Alburquerque native. He studied engineering and architecture at the University of New Mexico (UNM), and he eventually established his first studio, Antoine Predock Architect PC, in Albuquerque in 1967.

The AIA Gold Medal-winning architect is a prominent supporter of the University of New Mexico’s School of Architecture and Planning (SA+P). He’s designed several projects on the UNM campus, including the Cornell parking structure, the original UNM School of Law building, and George Pearl Hall, which houses SA+P. Predock’s also carried out an array of projects across New Mexico, including the La Luz community, Albuquerque Museum, Rio Grande Nature Center, and Spencer Theater.

David Adjaye named one of Time's "100 Most Influential People"

Every architect has to contend with gravity—but when David designed the National Museum of African American History and Culture, the challenges of that elemental force went far beyond the ordinary. How can a design acknowledge, and embody, the weight of this monumental history and yet transcend it right before your eyes?

It feels like this is going to be yet another great year for David Adjaye. The architect, who back in January became Sir David Adjaye after receiving the Knights Bachelor award from the Queen of England, is the only architect on this year's "100 Most Influential People" list (a distinction previously held by Bjarke Ingels in 2016).

AIA announces recipients of its 2017 Honorary Fellowships

Drawing from an international roster of architects who meet the five objects of nomination (including ensuring "the advancement of the living standards of people through their improved environment") the AIA has announced this year's honorary fellowships. The fellowship, which doesn't have a set number of fellows and usually favors international candidates, has honored no Americans or women this year, although it did include U.S.-based Denise Scott Brown among its 2016 beneficiaries. With a highly ethical drumroll, we're pleased to introduce this year's outstanding eight fellows:

Frank Gehry and Maya Lin to receive Presidential Medal of Freedom

Some good news from the White House: iconic designers Maya Lin and Frank Gehry will receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom from President Obama in a ceremony on November 22nd. While both designers have already made tremendous contributions to the global aesthetic landscape, they're not done yet. Gehry is currently undertaking the revitalization of the L.A. river among other projects, while according to the White House's official site, Maya Lin is working "on a multi-sited artwork/memorial, What is Missing? bringing awareness to the planet's loss of habitat and biodiversity."

Eskew+Dumez+Ripple honored with 2014 AIA Architecture Firm Award

Eskew+Dumez+Ripple was selected by the AIA Board of Directors to receive the 2014 AIA Architecture Firm Award. The AIA gives the award every year to a firm that has consistently created distinguished architecture for at least 10 years.

Founded less than 25 years ago by Allen Eskew, FAIA, Steven Dumez, FAIA, and Mark Ripple, AIA, the New Orleans-based firm has become recognized for their deep involvement in rebuilding the Hurricane Katrina-stricken city as well as their commitment to mentorship -- for which they received two AIA National Intern Development Program (IDP) Firm Awards.

EDR is receiving the honor at a bittersweet time with the passing of principal Allen Eskew earlier this week.

Goettsch Partners named as 2013 AIA Chicago Firm of the Year

Goettsch Partners was chosen to receive AIA Chicago's highest honor as the 2013 Firm of the Year [...] When selecting the recipient, a firm's entire history is taken to account, with special attention given to their work and accomplishments in the past decade.

Architect Renzo Piano named among honorary Italian senators

Renzo Piano, the award-winning architect who gave London the Shard and Paris the Pompidou centre, has been granted one of his country's highest honours, being named a senator for life by the Italian president. Giorgio Napolitano said the 75-year-old was among four distinguished Italians whose achievements in the cultural and scientific fields would allow them to contribute to the nation's parliament "in absolute independence of any party political considerations".
