John Leo Gillen's debut monograph remixes the design of temporary utopias from the 60s to today

The book explores the history of these ephemeral spaces in club culture. Told through key venues in important cities and moments across dance music history, it examines the rise of localised scenes and clubs, their distinct designs and architecture – as well as their shifts and demises as tastes, clientele and cities evolve.

The Irish-born Gillen studied for a Master's in Ephemeral Architecture and Temporary Spaces at the ELISAVA | School of Design and Engineering in Barcelona. He explains in the book’s introduction: “Club movements are born as causes, in DIY spaces, created out of necessity by marginalised peoples. This often involves some form of ‘hack’ or new model, quickly inspiring copycats and triggering the process of commercialisation.”

Foster + Partners chronicles 345 built works in new monograph

With nearly 500 images – many previously unpublished – the book highlights the contribution that the studio has made to a range of design challenges. Arranged in five decade-long chapters, spanning from 1967 to 2017, it is a chronological logbook of over 345 built works, with drawings of unbuilt works appearing at the end of each decade.

Portfolio, the name of the publication, is a complete account of the first fifty years of the practice. The book comes in at a robust 540 pages, includes a foreword by Norman Foster in addition to essays from the architectural critic Peter Buchanan.

New Monograph highlights Reiser + Umemoto's visionary oeuvre

Reiser + Umemoto have followed up their previous monograph, Atlas of Novel Tectonics, with a new tome: Projects and Their Consequences.

The monograph, published by Princeton Architectural Press, includes interviews and essays as well as more than 400 original drawings collages, and paintings.

Neil Denari launched his new monograph MASSX at Archinect Outpost last night

Thanks so much to everyone that braved the LA rush hour traffic to attend our book launch & signing with Neil Denari last night at Archinect Outpost. As predicted, all of the copies of MASSX we secured were quickly sold. We have heard from many of you out there who wanted to buy a copy, but couldn't attend our event, so we're reaching out to the publisher to see if we can snag some more copies of this very limited release.

During my conversation with Neil we spoke about his early vision for the monograph, the process of producing and editing this giant tome, his approach to communicating his work through print (Neil did all the layout and graphic design for this book!), and his vision for the next monograph, which he promises won't take another 19 years to release. We will be releasing this conversation as a podcast or article very soon, so stay tuned.

Untangling Louis Kahn's life and work

It is one of history’s cruelties that Louis Kahn is almost better known for his unconventional domestic arrangements than for his architecture. Kahn gave us a remarkable string of masterpieces that includes the Salk Institute and the Kimbell Art Museum, and yet he was one of those shambling geniuses whose life was a mess of contradictions. While his commissions took him around the world, he managed to maintain three separate families at home in Philadelphia.

"He had a reputation for blowing deadlines and budgets, testing the patience of clients. No one was surprised to learn after his death in 1974 that his firm was deep in debt. The turmoil of his life came to overshadow his accomplishments."

The author, Inga Saffron, reviews You Say to Brick: The Life of Louis Kahn by Wendy Lesser, a new biography/monograph on the renowned architect. "Wendy Lesser’s You Say to Brick is easily the most complete narrative of Kahn’s life and career, magnificently researched and gracefully written," she writes.

The first-ever AV Monograph on Rem Koolhaas focuses on the last 12 years

The Spanish-publisher Arquitectura Viva just published a new monograph on Rem Koolhaas, their first-ever on the Dutch architect. Focusing on work since he won the Pritzker in 2000, the monograph includes an essay and twelve critical texts by Luis Fernández-Galiano alongside images of some of the most notable projects by OMA / AMO over the last twelve years.
