NOARQ creates a curved house for a triangular lot in Portugal

A new project titled CASA ED & JO features a clean and curved design by NOARQ. The renovated house is located in Famalicão, Portugal with tucked away patios inside a triangular urban plot.

The lot is highly exposed due to different topographies between the adjoining streets. For this reason the house is closed on the north side to create more privacy. The house opens up on the east side where light enters the kitchen and the whole of the south facing front is open under a curved shade cover.

The house consists of two floors rehabilitated from the original structure. The first floor was expanded to preserve the garage, entrance, and vertical access storage area.

This modern prefab house in Spain boasts only a five hour assembly time

It took less than four months to build this modern prefab home in a factory, and only five hours to assemble it on-site. The minimalist modern abode is set in Valdés, a small town in Asturias, northwest of Madrid. Studio [baragaño] designed the Montaña House as a stylistic mix between a traditional home and the granaries found throughout the area.

The house, designed by Studio [baragaño], was constructed in less than four months in a factory in Madrid then transported to Valdes, where a local artisan embellished the structure with a slate roof. This space was designed using traditional residential architecture as inspiration and boasts an impressive on-site assembly time of just five hours.

The house serves as residence for an English landscaper and his family with two levels and plenty of common space. Diffuse natural light is used on the top level with light polycarbonate panels functioning as barriers between rooms. A metal staircase acts as a center piece around which the other spaces were organized. With a strictly minimalist interior, the home's defining feature is its fireplace suspended from the living room ceiling.

Anouska Hempel is a London-based hotelier and interior designer. Recently, Archinect correspondent, Jill Johnson, had the opportunity to stay at one of Anouska's recent projects, La Suite West, a boutique hotel in London, and followed up her stay with a brief conversation about the design.

Can you discuss the balance of architecture, interiors and styling in your work?
To manage all the work there are many rules. One cannot be considered without the other however we are a design studio so the vision (beauty) comes first which is complimented by the architecture, followed by the interiors and styling.

The style in your portfolio seems to range from highly decorative to minimal. How do you define your style?
Simply, I don’t think one can. I truly enjoy and appreciate a broad spectrum, as demonstrated, but if one had to define it in a word, that would most likely be “couture”. The style can vary but the quality most definitely cannot!
