ARTCUBE by Brandon Shigeta - Winner of the Golden Astro Boy Award 2011

In case you had missed LA's Little Tokyo Design Week back in July, here is the winner of the design week's grand prize, the Golden Astro Boy Award, in detail: ARTCUBE, an interactive installation by Los Angeles-based designer Brandon Shigeta:

ARTCUBE contains a novel interactive sculpture comprising photographs of the artistic processes and techniques captured by Brandon Shigeta. Stacked into random arrays forming a single cubic massing the sculpture includes hidden signed cards and custom artwork on the surface of the postcards by artists. Perhaps qualifying the exhibit as the heaviest photographic exhibit ever, the sculpture consists of approximately 65,000 postcards of approximately 80 various images to be removed by visitors as souvenirs. The sculpture provides visitors with participatory spatial and tactile experiences in which they remove their favorite images to change the overall form of the mass to reveal new images below. House Calls: ups, downs and bankruptcies

New home sales rose 11 percent in March from February to a seasonally adjusted rate of 300,000 homes. It was the first monthly increase since December.

The ULI reports that home sales, "remain below pre-recession levels in more than 95 percent of metropolitan areas, major markets in Texas and North Carolina lead the nation in new construction activity." Here are the top ten major metropolitan areas for new housing permits with figures from February 2010 to February 2011:

2. Austin, TX— 8,876
3. Raleigh-Durham, NC— 8,023
4. Charlotte, NC— 6,415
5. Nashville, TN— 5,579
6. Dallas-Fort Worth, TX— 22,686

The Las Vegas Review-Journal reports that, according to Home Builder Research, sales of Las Vegas homes rose in March but prices declined 5.2% to $200,000 for new construction and 6.2% to $113,000 for existing homes. Th...

Did anyone know? It's the AIA's National Architecture Week!

National Architecture Week, April 10-16, is a time to showcase the positive role architects play in our communities and highlight the power of design.

Oddly enough, the AIA's National Architecture Week-- a celebration of our physical built work-- will take place virtually.

To participate in the event: you can become a fan on Facebook, join in on a discussion on their Facebook page, follow the AIA on Foursquare, use the hashtag '#archweek11' when you check into Foursquare and share it on Twitter to be eligible to receive prizes, and, lastly, find an event hosted by a local AIA chapter.

According to this tidbit on Dexinger, a YouTube video from Clark Manus FAIA was promised to kickoff National Architecture Week. Unfortunately, the official video is not publically listed on their YouTube channel. An unlisted video, however, can be found here.
