Archinect Sessions: Live Panel on The Current State of LA's Architecture Student Publications

On this episode of Archinect Sessions we’re sharing the recording of a panel discussion I moderated last weekend at the A+D Museum, as part of the current exhibition The Los Angeles Schools. The panel brought together five students and three faculty members representing student-led publications from LA’s architecture programs. Rayne Laborde and Phoebe Webster represented UCLA's POOL; Marcelyn Gow represented SCI-Arc’s Offramp; Richard Mapes, Corie Yaguchi and Irvin Shaifa represented SCI-Arc's Underscore; Alvin Huang represented USC’s Supertall; and Stephen Phillips, Cal Poly LA Metro’s Director, represented their program’s hardcover publication LA Ten.

This 360-degree rooftop infinity pool could make a splash in London

For thrill-seeking swimmers, the chance to take a death-defying dip might not be far away. Plans to build a rooftop infinity pool -- with 360-degree views of the London skyline -- are in motion. The designs for the 600,000-liter pool and 55-story building, named Infinity London, have been unveiled by Compass Pools.

Infinity pools? Seen those before. On a skyscraper rooftop? Please. 360 degrees? Now we're talking!

"The pool is made from cast acrylic rather than glass, as this material transmits light at a similar wavelength to water so that the pool will look perfectly clear," British pool maker Compass Pools explains its lofty proposal for London. "The floor of the pool is also transparent, allowing visitors to see the swimmers and sky above." Of course it is.

How do people get inside that thing, you ask? "Swimmers will access the pool through a rotating spiral staircase based on the door of a submarine, rising from the pool floor when someone wants to get in or out." Cool. What could possibly go wrong.

Kohn Pedersen Fox's Brooklyn Point features the highest residential infinity pool in the Western Hemisphere

A new development in downtown Brooklyn boasts a residential infinity pool atop the 68 story building. The tower, Brooklyn Point, was designed by Kohn Pedersen Fox Associates and features luxury residences with custom interiors by Katherine Newman Design.

The heated, infinity edge pool is situated 680 feet above grade and will be open Spring through Fall offering wide-sweeping views of the Manhattan skyline.

Designed by Mathews Nielsen Landscape Architects, the landscaped rooftop retreat also features a sun deck, outdoor dining area, changing rooms and showers, outdoor movie screenings, and a stargazing observatory.

On a related note: another high-rise infinity pool sparked one of the most epic comment discussion threads in Archinect history revolving around the safety of such a design.

UMA proposes a kilometer-long infinity pool for Stockholm's waterfront

There’s long lap pools, and then there’s UMA’s design for Stockholm—a kilometer long infinity pool that serves as tourist attraction, recreational facility, and even infrastructure. The idea is to extend a walkway stretching from the northern part of Söderman to the eastern point out over the motorway that currently takes up most of the waterfront.

Perched on a load bearing structure made of a repetitive steel console structure bolted to the bedrock, the infinity pool would contain water pumped from the Baltic Sea and cleaned in a small treatment plant. The water would be heated with waste heat. According to the designers, you could even swim in parts of it during the spring and fall. In the winter, meanwhile, the temperature would be lowered to the point where the water freezes over, enabling ice skating.

Duality + tension = elegance in the Ivanhoe House

How does one maintain excitement while embodying elegance? The artful tension of the Ivanhoe House, as designed by Billy Kavellaris of the Australian firm KUD, is an excellent example. Located in the Melbourne suburb of Ivanhoe, the single-story 370 square meter house initially engages visitors with its unusual aesthetics and then creates settings that are elegant without ever becoming staid. "The house is a clever orchestration of balancing tension that has created wondrous moments throughout. Ivanhoe house can be read as a conversation of dualities, of heavy and lightness, public and private and of light and darkness," as the architect explains in his project description.

This conversation starts with the imposing rectilinear entryway, which combines weighty solidity with the allure of a luxurious glassed-in portico. Well, pretty much every other thing in the known universe, which makes the existence of this Jackson + Ryan Architects-designed pool not only an eye-catching publicity stunt for the residential tower's developer, but a viral, stomach-clenching video that is now titilating news anchors over at CNN. Tadao Ando's sprawling Santa Fe compound for Tom Ford hits the market at $75M

Whatever canvas he is given, whether it's a highly constrained urban lot or a sweeping New Mexico landscape, Tadao Ando rarely falters. Cerro Pelon Ranch, the two compounds he designed for former architectural student turned fashion maven/filmmaker Tom Ford, is no exception.

Enormous, horizon-hugging curved concrete walls ripple out from the primary rectilinear residence, engaging the surrounding terrain while creating a boundary for the enormous pools adjacent to the house.

The ranch, with construction oversight provided by Marmol Radziner, is currently on the market for $75 million.

These public pools, or sundlaugs, serve as the communal heart of Iceland, sacred places whose affordability and ubiquity are viewed as a kind of civil right....The pool is Iceland’s social space: where families meet neighbors, where newcomers first receive welcome, where rivals can’t avoid one another.

Dan Kois considers how communal pools and the sociability of soaking, are "a key to Icelandic well-being."

On a related note, Dan Hill recently published an essay reflecting on ‘The Pool’, a book published as part of The Australian pavilion for the 2016 Venice Architecture Biennale. The interviews collected therein he finds, make a case for the pool as the authentically antipodean contribution to urbanism, a distinctly Australian public place, the country’s piazza.

Pool House Florida by NL Architects

About a year ago, we published the rather unusual proposal for a Bike Pavilion in China's Hainan Province designed by NL Architects. The concept of using any available square inch of roof space seems to have grown into a trademark of the Amsterdam-based architects, as they are now sharing their latest proposal, a pool house for a client in Del Rey Beach, Florida.

In October 2011 we received an exhilarating email by Andrew R:

I have researched a number of highly successful up and coming contemporary architects with world- wide acclaim, and feel that the work of NL Architects exemplifies the vision I have in mind for my future home.

Andrew purchased a property in Del Ray Beach, Florida and planned to replace the existing 12,000 square foot mansion with a smaller home of 8,000 and guest house of 4,000 square foot.

We just got news from the guys at Family and The Office of PlayLab, both young design firms in New York, who need your support for their exciting project + Pool, a floating pool in NYC that cleans the river water it sits in - like a giant strainer dropped into the river.

This project is a completely self-initiated project by the two firms. Following the completion of a preliminary engineering feasibility report done with engineers at Arup, they are now preparing to physically test and ultimately build a full-scale working prototype of a section of the pool itself. The designers just launched a 30-day Kickstarter campaign 5 days ago, already raising almost $15,000, and they could certainly use your help (and the help of your friends and their friends) to help to spread the word further.
