REX opens The Lindemann Performing Arts Center at Brown University

Brown University has shared photos to go along with the inauguration of its new REX/Joshua Ramus-designed Lindemann Performing Arts Center tomorrow in Providence, Rhode Island.

The building supports both performance and instruction on campus with an emphasis on creating new forms of collaboration inside a 101,000-square-foot container of flexibly configurable spaces. It combines with the twelve-year-old Diller Scofidio + Renfro-designed Perry and Marty Granoff Center for the Creative Arts next door to create the new Ronald O. Perelman Arts District, which is accessible from Brown’s main The Walk pedestrian corridor and provides the city with an added cultural venue as the university’s footprint within it expands.

The Brown University Performing Arts Center is a formally stunning project designed by REX for the Brown University campus in the relatively small town of Providence, Rhode Island. The exterior of the almost 100,000 square foot building consists of a large monolithic mass clad in aluminum, with a cantilevered glass-encased 13-foot tall clearstory jutting out from the lobby level, covering a lower-level outdoor public space.

REX's Necklace Residence brings a family's dream home one step closer to reality

REX recently unveiled the final design for the Necklace Residence, a yet-to-be-built, luxurious family dream home of its own kind. Overlooking the Long Island Sound, the intricately designed 43,500-square-foot project is an ensemble of five private family homes created for a husband and wife, their four children, and each of their children's future families. It was designed so that each home can be experienced autonomously while being part of a larger domestic network, like a necklace, REX describes.

The Necklace Residence's layout also allows the family to experience different views of the surrounding landscape, from a dense forest on one side to the ocean on the other.

After stalling for years, the $243 million World Trade Center Performing Arts Center started to make headway in recent months, and now Silverstein Properties have revealed the official renderings. With the help of billionaire businessman Ronald O. Perelman's $75 million gift, the 90,000-square-foot marble cube designed by REX will both stand out as an impressive piece of cultural architecture and co-exists with the other structures on the WTC complex.

Perelman recently stepped down as Chairman of Carnegie Hall after butting heads with staff and other board members and pushing for the institution to present more pop music. He hopes to fulfill this at the World Trade Center, stating, “I would hope it is the first venue of choice for the Bruce Springsteens and the Bon Jovis and the Yo-Yo Mas and the Lang Langs, and at the same time it’s a place where we could have produced a “Hamilton” project or where we could produce a new ballet.”

After being stalled for 12 years, the Performing Arts Center at the World Trade Center (PACWTC) is moving forward thanks to a $75 million gift from billionaire businessman and philanthropist Ronald O. Perelman. Brooklyn-based studio REX will design the complex, which will cost a total of $240 million and become the permanent home for the Tribeca Film Festival.

REX Revealed as the Architects Redesigning the $200M WTC Performing Arts Complex

Since July, the Lower Manhattan Development Corporation (LMDC) has been working with an anonymous architectural firm to hash out a new concept for the Performing Arts Center at the World Trade Center, and now, nearly five months later, the Performing Arts Center board has finally released the name of the lead architect: Brooklyn-based studio REX led by Joshua Prince-Ramus, a former protégé starchitect Rem Koolhaas.

Widely hailed in the architects-under-50 bracket, REX founding principal and president Joshua Prince-Ramus will receive the sixth Marcus Prize, as announced today by the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee School of Architecture and Urban Planning (SARUP). The prize is awarded to architects who have demonstrated at least 10 years of exceptional practice and show a "strong trajectory to greatness", as SARUP describes.

In addition to the $100,000 cash prize, Prince-Ramus will make scheduled visits to SARUP and participate in public lectures and and workshops during the spring 2016 semester. He'll also be leading a graduate design studio at the school alongside Adjunct Associate Professor, Matt Jarosz. There isn't much detail about the studio at the moment, but it will deal with specific architectural challenges with the intent to bring about long-term benefits to Milwaukee’s urban fabric.

REX's Five Manhattan West is the latest revamp for an evolving NYC

REX recently unveiled their scheme for redesigning the historic Davis Brody building on 450 West 33rd St in New York. The $200 million project consists of repositioning, re-cladding and interior renovation -- making it yet another addition to major redevelopments to NYC's evolving neighborhoods and when adaptive reuse continues to be on the rise. Construction is expected to be complete in 2016.

"Designed by architecture firm Davis Brody (now Davis Brody Bond) and completed in 1969, 450 West 33rd Street (450W33) is an exemplar of late Brutalist architecture. The edifice’s structure is effectively a steel bridge spanning the Penn Station rail lines leading to Hudson Yards, supporting a cast-in-place concrete column-and-slab frame. The building’s enclosure was originally composed of precast concrete fill-in panels with integrated windows."
