As the year comes to a close, there are many things to reflect upon. After navigating 2022, filled with ups, downs, and everything else in between, the industry as a whole continued to endure. From architects and designers to students and faculty, it's an important time to reflect on what we've learned, overcome, let go of, and challenged.

This year has been filled with a mix of exciting, thought-provoking, inspiring, and head-shaking news. As the industry focuses on rebounding from the heavy-hitting months of 2020, the team at Archinect has watched, listened, connected, and learned from the community. During the year, our editorial team has grown both literally and figuratively. So as we kept watch and reported on the moments of triumph, mishaps, and progress within the industry, we took a moment to reflect and express gratitude.

With the holidays approaching and the year coming to a close, we would like to express our thanks by sharing a few things we are grateful for in 2021.

2020 has been an extraordinarily challenging year. Covid-19 forced us to isolate from family, friends and colleagues, and work from home as the industry struggled to keep up with the changes the pandemic brought. Many firms experienced drastic reductions in work, as industries such as hospitality and retail faced incredible hardship and an uncertain future. As a result, many individuals in our industry faced layoffs, furloughs and pay cuts. Political tensions, cultural divisions and a heightened push for social justice further defined this historic year. During this hardship, however, there remains much to be thankful for. We'd like to take this opportunity, as Americans celebrate Thanksgiving, to share a few those things that our team is grateful for in 2020.

These are crazy days we’re living in.

This COVID-19 pandemic is like nothing most of us have ever experienced. It’s affecting almost everyone in the world, without any bias toward nationality, race, religion or political affiliation. The crisis is forcing us to change the way we live, and the way we work. We don’t know how long this “new normal” will last, but the changes we make today will have lasting effects on us all.

Why we're starting a print magazine after 20 years of publishing digitally

When I started Archinect 20 years ago, in the summer of 1997, the internet was still many years away from becoming a replacement for newspapers and magazines. Since then, the media landscape has changed drastically, with most print publications now dedicating the majority of their time and budget to their digital platforms. Today we consume media in a different way than we have ever done in the past, for better or worse. We expect more content, with higher quality, but human nature tends to give in to the quick and gratifying. Journalism has struggled to monetize quality investigations and writing as sites like Buzzfeed have proven that listicles, fun photos, and quick content bites offer a much greater return in dollars and followers.

2016 has been a rough year, and it's not over. Finding consolation through the rough patches, and appreciation during the better parts, requires flexing those muscles of reflection and gratitude. So on this Thanksgiving, to break the champagne over the 2016 holiday season, we've gathered a few things we're grateful for in architecture, to share and celebrate. Cheers!

From September 1999 to November 2001 we commissioned many of the most groundbreaking designers in the emerging new web design medium to design a monthly cover page for Archinect. The mission was to create a cover page invoking an architectural theme, using the tools that each designer was most comfortable working with.
