In this 9th installment of our ongoing series Cross-Talk, we are looking at the role of Play in Architecture and how it might find its way to a naive and revitalized foundation for disciplinary foundations.

The mission of Archinect’s series Cross-Talk is to bring forward the positive aspects of the polemic and allow for the resulting conflict to bring to life an otherwise still and comfortable climate of creativity—if there can be one. Cross-Talk attempts—if to only say that it did—to allow text the freedom that the image has accepted and embraced. Cross-Talk attempts to force the no, to contradict itself, to anger, to please and then anger again, if only to force a stance, to pull out the position of the self, of the discipline and of the hour as a means to begin and maintain conversations moving forward.

MOS has developed an impressive cache of work over a relatively brief period of time, including a range of designs unequivocal to the company’s unique, and at times quirky, style. Their approach considers economic climates and environmental limitations, but evades conventional aesthetics. Take it from the firm’s website; MOS rejects the ordinary. A succinct self-description concludes that their company is “a collective of designers, architects, thinkers and state-of-the-art weirdos.”

With the recent release of MOS: Selected Works, it seems fitting to reflect on a selection of projects that highlight the company’s discernible attitude toward conceptual design and architecture.

Needless to say, children require very little to have a lot of fun. An imaginary world can be transformed from the most modest of settings. Really, all that’s needed is a bit of space (albeit safe and relatively clean), and a great imagination –something that little ones have an endless supply of.

So when it comes time for kids to embark on the short-lived, yet impactful journey that is kindergarten, the most nurturing of environments are those that foster diversity, social connectivity, and creativity. The Danish architecture firm COBE has used that ethos to cultivate an amazing setting for children attending preschool in the Copenhagen neighborhood of Frederiksberg. The educational institution encompasses a unique campus, a blank canvas of sorts for young minds to re-imagine a world of their own.

Adelaide's Pink Moon Saloon is a snug fit for a local alleyway

The Pink Moon Saloon in Adelaide, Australia, almost looks like something inspired by a Roald Dahl book. The restaurant takes on the appearance of a traditional woodland hut, yet randomly resides between two ordinary office buildings in the midst of a bustling city avenue. The traditional façade resembles the type of cottage one might imagine nestled amongst a more rural landscape; or at least juxtaposed within an environment less urban than the twelve-foot wide alleyway it’s been built into.

Danny Forster, Extreme Host

This Wednesday, May 31st, a new season of the Discovery Channel's Extreme Engineering will debut at 10pm. This season will introduce an on-screen host to replace the previous voice-over narrator. The new host, Danny Forster, also happens to be an architect who is currently working on his MArch at Harvard's GSD. Archinect's founder/director Paul Petrunia recently had an opportunity to talk to Danny about the show, his studies, and his previous gig as a stand up comic.
