Sauvie Island Bridge,
Sauvie Island, OR: Multnomah County Bridges.
Completed June 2008

Project Designer.:
Replacement of the sole bridge connecting the expansive Sauvie Island, a largely agricultural rural haven ten miles outside Portland, with the mainland. Structural type will be a half through arch of weathering steel, with concrete piers. Scope of work included development of presentations to a Citizens Advisory Committee, as well as to county officials. Worked in tandem with engineers to develop architectural features and elements

The design intent was a based on a local threatened butterfly species; Oregon Silver Spot Butterfly. Bow Tied Arch with radial cabling, and custom tear drop penetrations on the bowtied arch.

Sauvie Island has become a popular destination for a variety of people — those seeking the freshest and best produce; birdwatchers and those wanting to hike, bike, fish, hunt, or use the public beaches. The island is home to number of organic farms and artists. The new Sauvie Island Bridge will provide a wider roadway access for larger trucks and bicycle and pedestrian paths. H2L2 was asked to design a bridge to be contextual to the community and presented through Citizens Advisory Committee.
