    Taking It to the People

    Gregory Dowell
    Apr 10, '09 8:18 PM EST

As I've mentioned before, part of my thesis project involved the engagement of the Richmond, IN community. From the outset I worked with a gentleman from the area as a direct contact to the community. He has restored some historic buildings downtown and continues to play a role in the preservation effort in Richmond. With his help I was able to set up a public presentation of my thesis project in Richmond, the details are as follows. If you are in the area please stop in.

The goal in presenting my design project to the community is to show Richmond the value of preserving historic buildings, especially one with such a rich cultural history. While it will be my vision I will be presenting I want to stress that its is but one vision for adapting the building, but ultimately the first step is saving the building. I don't want to sell my design short, but I also don't want the community to think this is the only option.

If I'm lucky, this will provide enough traction to save the Richmond Gas Company Building from the wrecking ball. Once its saved what is done with the building is an obstacle course of needs, money, and other intangibles. It will provide a forum at which to speak of the value of saving historic structures. It will be about my project. It will be about preserving place memory. It will be about sustainability. It will be about a lot of things, and hopefully its a learning experience for all those involved, including myself.

Oh yeah, I get an audience greater than three people.
