"DRL is like someone you really fancy, but she's a b*"

Tonight, my friend KAtie Trotter said something pretty apt for the moment:

"When it's over, you are going to be really depressed. I mean, DRL is like someone you really fancy, but she's a real bitch"

    Laughter . . .

Aaron Betsky advised me that studying at the DRL was like taking crack as an architectural student. I took that to mean that it was thrilling, addictive, and potentially difficult to reintegrate back into society afterwards. I think he meant it as a compliment.

The course I am currently in the process of completing is the Design Research Lab, aka DRL. Sorry, I thought it was part of my school name title . . .

      hi luis,

i am actually very fascinated (well, partly because of the AA program description - and partly because of the highly stylized graphics) which always fascinates me and makes me think that the DRL is such a wonderful program (not the price though)

what are your thoughts on bein in DRL yourself? is it really a worthwhile experience immersing in the program itself? or is it the affiliations for post educational connections that the DRL has most benefit?

just my thoughts.. since u r there and since your friend commented on it bein a "bitch"... as because i was (and still am..) very interested and was thinking of joinin the course.

thanks for your comments and also could you please expound on the bitch thing.. in what ways is it like that? what warranted that description?

I heard the DRL is basically a boot camp to train people to go work for Zaha. She must be the bitch in your analogy.

Luis, good luck on the final presentation, and congratulations

someone equally betskinating told me that the AA was like drinking from a firehose, but making it supersonic, to 11, at a bootcamp in Epping Forest where no-one has heard of drrrl. but they was drinking at the time... and from kazakhstan

I heard that the ozone layer is like borco - self-healing

No, not at all . . . though, many people do go work at Zaha's. In DRL there is a phase I and phase II. Right now I am finishing phase II. Phase III, phase IV, etc is the way to refer DRL'ers past . . . sometimes it is joked that Zaha's is phase III.

theres ppl at the DRL working for diff companies, Zaha is not the only office (or STARchitect) in london and/or linked to the AA/DRL/etc.

about the comments...about also what Betsky supposedly said...mmhh i dunno i kind of agree, i spent a semester at the AA and i loved it, and i also know i worked as hell
but then a few years after, while i was doing my master degree at Barcelona, i went to visit some friends at London, partying one night in a friend's house, another friend of mine came...circa 3 am...with a folder with all the printouts of his one year project, straight out of tutorial or critic w/his tutor, 3 weeks left of his final review, and i cannot explain what was his look and expression of his face that made me realize inside me...

"im glad to be doing my master at Barcelona and not at the DRL"

still i think the school is great, the program and the city, and i higly respect graduates from the entire AA programs....and ur lucky to be on it, but yeah, at the end it might be just a bitch u really fancied....

P.S. dont close urself to realize all this hard work is worth it only to work for 2 or 3 starchitects offices.... trust me at the end u will have way more potential than that....if theres something i learned at the Aa is to be respectfull of "sacred cows" worl, but still to realize my ideas and points of views or thoughts could be as valid as theirs...

as one day FOA's Zaera-Polo said: the best architecture in the world right now is being developed and designed by people under 30 years old...

      and he's so right....

      GOOD LUCK W/FINALS....

P.S. heard by "Monarch" ur going to BCN...cool we might meet around there good luck!

While those kick ass models are part of the team project, credits must go to Shu-Hao Wu, master modelman ...
